A experiência de indivíduos LGBT poderá incluir discriminação e dificuldades na afirmação da sua identidade, no relacionamento familiar e integração com os outros, o que pode provocar efeitos negativos fisiológicos e psicológicos. Indivíduos LGBT podem estar sujeitos a ódio, estigma, desânimo e a incompreensão. Poderão existir consequências objetivas e materiais. Existem estudos que dizem que a esperança de vida de indivíduos LGBT é baixa em meios contrários à diversidade sexual e de género, levantando riscos acrescidos de morte por doenças físicas, homicídio, e suicídio.
A literatura indica que adolescentes LGBT sujeitos a discriminação e à não aceitação pela sua família apresentam mais tendência a cometer suicídio. Mulheres lésbicas que são submetidas a escrutínio, podem sofrer de distúrbios alimentares. Igualmente, indivíduos gays e transgénero podem apresentar elevados níveis de ansiedade, tentativas de suicídio, excesso de consumo de substâncias e depressão.
Como pode ajudar o acompanhamento psicológico?
O objetivo do acompanhamento psicológico é proporcionar um ambiente de segurança e confidencialidade para permitir a livre expressão da identidade e auto-conceito, expressão de emoções negativas quanto à possível discriminação, no relacionamento familiar e na integração social com uma perceção adequada a respeito de como a violência, o preconceito e o desprezo pode prejudicar o bem-estar e a saúde mental dos indivíduos. Efeitos negativos fisiológicos e psicológicos são também explorados, assim como o desenvolvimento pessoal do indivíduo. A procura de ajuda de um psicólogo ou psicóloga pode auxiliar a superar as variáveis que podem causar sofrimento, auxiliando também no desenvolvimento psicológico do indivíduo.
